Marketing pathway · Leadership role

Lead the whole function as a Head of Marketing Volunteer.

You have built brands, generated demand and led teams for years. Now put that hard won judgement to work where it counts: lead the entire marketing function for an early stage tech startup, or for SkilledUp Life itself, on your own terms and for a mission that matters.

Voluntary and fully remote. Up to three hours a day across a bounded sixty day term, designed to fit a senior life.

The honest question

Why would a seasoned marketing leader volunteer at all?

It is a fair question. You are established. You have nothing left to prove on a CV. So the reason to lead a marketing function as a Volunteer is not the reason a junior would give. It is not about breaking in.

It is about staying at the edge of a craft that is being rewritten by artificial intelligence, leading without corporate friction, mentoring a founder who could never afford a Chief Marketing Officer, and doing work that genuinely matters. The reasons that follow are written for exactly that.

Marketing changes faster than any other function. The fastest way to stay sharp is to lead a real one.

The case for experienced leaders, in one line.
Six reasons it is worth your time

Reasons that hold up for a senior career.

Not the beginner pitch. These are the reasons experienced marketing leaders choose to lead a function through SkilledUp Life.

🎚️
Lead, do not assist

A whole function, from day one

You are the Head of Marketing, not an extra pair of hands. You own the strategy, the priorities and the outcomes, and you direct a team of specialists across growth, content, social, search and analytics.

🧠
Stay current

Keep your craft at the edge

Channels, tooling and artificial intelligence are reshaping marketing every quarter. Leading a live function keeps your instincts modern and your playbook fresh, which is far better than watching the change from the sidelines.

📂
Fresh proof

Recent, referenceable work

Even a distinguished career benefits from current case studies. Walk away with campaigns you ran this year, outcomes you can quote and a founder reference dated now, not a decade ago.

🤝
Mentor

Pass on what you know

Mentor a founder who could never afford a Chief Marketing Officer, and coach the marketers on your team. Turn decades of pattern recognition into someone else's head start.

🌍
Network

A network worth having

Work alongside founders, operators and fellow senior professionals across 148 countries. Advisory seats, fractional roles and board introductions tend to follow people who show up and deliver.

🗓️
On your terms

It fits the life you have built

Up to three hours a day, fully remote, across a bounded term of sixty Volunteer days. It works around a portfolio career, a sabbatical, a notice period or semi retirement without taking over your week.

Two places to lead

Lead a tech startup, or lead SkilledUp Life itself.

The Head of Marketing role opens two genuine doors. Choose the one that fits what you want from the term, or take one and then the other.

Door one
🚀

A tech startup of your choosing

Pick an early stage tech startup from those listed, become its Head of Marketing and build the growth engine the founder cannot yet afford to hire.

  • Own positioning, demand and brand from the ground up.
  • Shape the go to market story while the product is still young.
  • See your decisions move the numbers within the term.
Door two
💛

SkilledUp Life itself

SkilledUp Life is a tech startup too, built and run by its own Volunteers, with zero paid marketing budget. Lead the growth of the very platform that helps tens of thousands of people change their careers, on organic craft alone.

  • Market a mission that reaches 66,000+ Volunteers in 148 countries.
  • Lead a distributed Volunteer marketing team at real scale.
  • Stand behind a pure win win, real value flowing both ways.
Marketplaces and two sided growth

On a marketplace, you market both sides at once.

Many of the most interesting tech startups are marketplaces, and SkilledUp Life is one of them. A marketplace lives or dies on balance. Too much demand and the supply side cannot keep up. Too much supply and demand goes cold. As Head of Marketing you do not grow one audience, you grow two and keep them in step.

The talent side · Volunteers

Skilled professionals

66,000+ people who want real, referenceable experience. They need a reason to join, a profile journey worth finishing and live Opportunities that fit their ambitions.

  • Attract the right professionals, not simply more of them.
  • Help them complete strong profiles and apply.
  • Keep them active across a full Volunteer Term.
Keep both sides in balance
The demand side · Tech startups

Founders who need a team

Early stage founders who cannot yet hire. They need to trust the talent, understand the model and list the Opportunities that bring the right Volunteers in.

  • Win the trust of founders weighing the model.
  • Make listing an Opportunity feel effortless.
  • Turn first hires into lasting belief.

Two funnels, not one

Acquisition and activation run separately on each side. You measure, and grow, both.

Liquidity is the prize

A match made is worth more than a click. The goal is to grow the two sides toward each other.

A different message each way

What attracts a Volunteer is not what attracts a founder. Each side hears its own story.

The same discipline applies across marketplace startups, from buyers and sellers to riders and drivers and hosts and guests.

The scope of the role

You do not do the tasks. You lead the people who do.

As Head of Marketing you assemble and direct the whole function from a pool of 66,000+ skilled Volunteers. Each role can be held by one Volunteer or several, so the team scales well beyond ten. Roles may include, but are not limited to, the following.

Where you come in

Inherit a running team, or build one from scratch.

Startups arrive at different stages. Choose the starting point that suits the leader you are.

Starting point one
🔧

Take over an existing team

Step into a marketing function that already has Volunteers in seat and work in progress. Read what is delivering, fix what is not and lift the whole team's output.

  • Inherit live campaigns, channels and people.
  • Reset priorities and raise the standard.
  • Coach specialists who are already in flight.
Starting point two
🧱

Build from the ground up

Start with a blank page. Define the strategy, write the Opportunities, recruit your specialists from 66,000+ Volunteers and assemble the entire function yourself.

  • Set the strategy before a single Volunteer joins.
  • Recruit and shape every role on the team.
  • Grow from a core few to as many as 100 Volunteers under the GTM plan.
Promotional path

Not ready to lead the whole function yet? Climb to it.

The Head of Marketing seat asks for genuine leadership experience. If you do not have it yet, you can earn it here across three Volunteer Terms, rising from a single channel to the whole function, and onward toward Chief Marketing Officer.

Term one
Specialist

Deliver at operational level

Join the marketing team in a hands on role and deliver significant, visible results that earn you a name.

For example

Term two
Sub team leader · leads about five

Step up to management

Earn a promotion and lead a sub team of around five Volunteers, owning a whole slice of the function.

For example
Sub Team Leader, ContentGraphic designersCopywritersVideo creators
Term three
Head of Marketing

Lead the whole function

Take the top marketing seat, set the strategy and direct every channel and specialist on the team.

The seat
Head of Marketing

Each promotion is earned on results, not time served. From the top seat, the same trajectory continues toward Chief Marketing Officer.

What you walk away with

Even a strong career gains from this.

A leadership term leaves you with proof, people and perspective that stay useful long after it ends.

Modern campaign case studies

The strategies you set and the campaigns your team shipped, ready to reference.

Outcomes you can quote

Real pipeline, reach and conversion numbers from a live tech startup, not a slide.

A founder reference

A verifiable reference from the founders you led marketing for, dated this year.

A team you built and led

Evidence that you can assemble and direct a marketing function, not only run a channel.

A senior global network

Connections with founders, operators and marketers across 148 countries.

Work that mattered

The satisfaction of helping a founder, or a global mission, reach the people it was built for.

The commitment, in brief

Clear scope, no surprises.

Senior people value clarity, so here are the boundaries of a Volunteer Term before you begin.

3 hrs

Per day, maximum

Monday to Friday: a manageable daily add on to your week.

60 days

Over three or more months

A clear, bounded leadership term with a defined end point.

Extend if you wish

Continue by mutual agreement when it is working for both sides.

A Volunteer Term is voluntary throughout. You cannot earn financially or gain any taxable reward in kind during the term, and there are no paid jobs via SkilledUp Life. The value you take away is experience, proof, network and impact.

Questions

The questions experienced leaders ask.

Is the role genuinely unpaid? +
Yes. A Volunteer Term is voluntary throughout. You cannot earn financially or receive any taxable reward in kind, and there are no paid jobs via SkilledUp Life. What you gain is experience, proof, network and impact.
How much time does it really take? +
Up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, across sixty Volunteer days over three or more months. You agree the rhythm with the startup, and many leaders shape it around a portfolio career or a notice period.
Can I do this while I am employed or between roles? +
Many do. The bounded hours are designed to sit alongside another commitment, a sabbatical or semi retirement. You simply agree your availability with the founder before you begin.
Which startups can I lead marketing for? +
Early stage tech startups only. Charities, non profits and similar organisations sit outside SkilledUp Life. You apply to the Head of Marketing Volunteer Opportunities that have been listed. You cannot approach a tech startup that has not listed the role. SkilledUp Life itself lists the role too when it is recruiting.
Will I have a paid marketing budget? +
No. SkilledUp Life runs on zero paid budget, and most early stage startups here are the same. Growth is earned through organic, content and product led marketing, not bought. For many experienced leaders that constraint is the most rewarding part, it is the purest test of the craft.
Is the work credible enough to reference? +
Yes. You walk away with campaigns you ran, outcomes you can quote and a verifiable founder reference dated this year. It is real work for a real company, not a course or a case study.
What support do I get as a leader? +
You have the Knowledge Base, account management and a clear framework around the Volunteer Term. You lead the function, and SkilledUp Life provides the structure and the pool of 66,000+ Volunteers to staff it.
Do I need formal marketing qualifications to lead? +
No. This role is about judgement and track record, not certificates. If you have led campaigns, owned outcomes and guided people, you have what the seat asks for.
Should I choose a tech startup or SkilledUp Life itself? +
Either, and you can do both across different terms. Choose a startup when you want to own a single growth story from end to end. Choose SkilledUp Life when you want scale, a two sided marketplace and a pure win win at the heart of the model.
Can I begin as Head of Marketing directly? +
If your experience fits the role, yes, you apply to it straight away. If you are still building toward it, the promotional path lets you rise from specialist to sub team leader to Head of Marketing across three terms.
I come from a corporate background, not startups. Does that matter? +
Not at all. A great deal of what you have learned transfers, and leading an early stage team is one of the fastest ways to understand how startups really work. Many leaders use a term here precisely to make that move.
What happens when the term ends? +
You capture your achievements, request a reference for your results and, when it is working for both sides, extend by mutual agreement. Many leaders stay connected to the founders and teams long after the term closes.
How do I apply? +
Create a Volunteer account, complete your profile, then apply to up to three Head of Marketing Opportunities. The full nine step journey is explained on the how it works page.
