Why finance at a startup

See the whole picture, from the first invoice to the funding round.

Early finance roles in large firms often mean one ledger or one report. In an early tech startup you see everything: cash, costs, pricing, forecasts and fundraising, and your numbers inform real decisions.

1

Real decisions

Your forecasts shape hiring, pricing and fundraising.

2

The whole picture

Bookkeeping to investor materials, in one place.

3

Evidence you can show

Reports, models and processes you built.

Who this pathway is for

Find your starting point.

Tech startups need finance people at every level. Check which description fits you, what you should already know and what you would take on.

Starting out

New to finance

Students, graduates and career changers who are careful with numbers.

You should already know
Spreadsheets and the basics of income, costs and cash.
You would take on
Bookkeeping support, expense tracking and simple reports with guidance.
Crossing over

From another field

People from banking, retail management, administration or analysis roles.

You should already know
How to read a budget and keep accurate records.
You would take on
Reconciliations, budgets and monthly reporting.
Building up

Already in finance

You should already know
Management accounts, forecasting and financial modelling.
You would take on
Owning month end, the forecast and investor-ready numbers.
Experienced

Ready to lead

Finance managers, controllers and CFOs, including people returning after a break or semi-retired.

You should already know
How to set up finance processes and advise a founder.
You would take on
Leading the finance team, setting controls and preparing for fundraising.
The roles tech startups recruit

Seven finance roles, one pathway.

An example project

What a Volunteer Term can look like.

Every tech startup is different. This example, a month end and forecast project, shows the kind of deliverables a finance Volunteer takes on, step by step.

1

Learn the business model

Understand how the startup earns money and what it spends.

2

Tidy the books

Reconcile transactions and categorise costs consistently.

3

Produce the monthly report

Build a simple management report with cash, costs and revenue.

4

Update the forecast

Refresh the 12 month forecast and cash runway.

5

Present to the founder

Walk the founder through the numbers in your weekly update.

Grow across your terms

Contributor, then owner, then lead.

Many Volunteers continue for up to three consecutive Volunteer Terms by mutual agreement. Each term can add responsibility, and every handover matters, because succession planning keeps the startup moving when you move on.

Term 1

Contribute

Keep the books, track expenses and produce simple reports.

Term 2

Own

Own month end, the budget and the forecast.

Term 3

Lead

Lead finance, coach newer Volunteers and hand over documented finance processes.

Your finance portfolio

Leave with evidence, not a list of courses.

Depending on your role and the deliverables you complete, a Volunteer Term can leave you with evidence a hiring manager can check.

Reports you produced

Monthly management reports a founder relied on.

Models you built

Budgets, forecasts and runway models.

Processes you set up

Month end, billing and expense processes.

Fundraising support

Investor materials and data rooms you prepared.

A Tech Founder reference

You can ask the Tech Founder you collaborated with for a reference.

Global connections

Connections with founders and finance professionals across 158+ countries.

Finance and AI

AI does the sums. People explain what they mean.

AI now categorises transactions, reconciles accounts and drafts reports. The value of a finance professional shifts to judgement: spotting what looks wrong, explaining the story behind the numbers and advising the founder. Volunteers who combine AI tools with that judgement will stand out.

1

Faster closes

Use AI to categorise and reconcile, then review.

2

Better forecasts

Test scenarios quickly and explain the assumptions.

3

Trusted advice

Founders rely on people, not dashboards, to make the call.

Questions

Before you apply.

Can I join without a finance qualification? +
Yes. Bookkeeping support, expense tracking and simple reports are good places to start. Show what you can do in your profile, for example a budget you built, so tech startups can see your starting point.
Is this paid? +
No. All opportunities are voluntary, and you cannot earn financially or gain any taxable reward in kind. There are no paid jobs provided by tech startups on SkilledUp Life, during or after your term. What you gain is practical experience on a real startup.
How much time must I commit? +
Up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, across 60 Volunteer days over three months or more. It is fully remote and flexible. Rapid feedback and regular updates matter most in the first two weeks.
Will I sign off accounts or give regulated advice? +
No. Volunteers support the startup's finance tasks. Statutory accounts, audits, tax filings and regulated advice remain the responsibility of the founder and their qualified accountant.
Can this count towards my accountancy training? +
It depends on your professional body. Ask them whether practical experience at a tech startup counts, and keep a record of what you delivered.
Will this help me get a job? +
It can strengthen your applications. Real deliverables and a Tech Founder reference give you evidence to discuss at interview. We cannot promise employment, and outcomes depend on your role and what you deliver.
