Marketing career pathway · Live now

Build a marketing career that leapfrogs the queue.

Marketing is the function being rewritten fastest by artificial intelligence, and the one where proof beats credentials every time. Do real marketing for a real tech startup, master one of ten specialisms or climb the whole ladder, and walk away with outcomes an employer can verify. All of it remote and flexible, whether you are employed, freelancing, studying, between roles or just starting out with no experience yet.

Voluntary and fully remote. Up to three hours a day across a bounded sixty day term. No marketing degree required to begin.

Why marketing, why now

The skill that decides whose product gets noticed.

Every tech startup has a product. Far fewer have anyone who can make the market care. That gap is exactly where careers are made, and it is widening as channels, tooling and artificial intelligence reshape the craft every single quarter.

The fastest way to stay ahead of that change is not another course. It is to run live marketing, on a real product, with real outcomes you can point to afterwards.

🎯

Real, not theoretical

Campaigns you actually ran and can reference, not classroom case studies or certificates.

Current, not dated

Modern channels and AI-era tooling on a live startup, so your playbook stays fresh.

📈

Proven, not promised

Reach, pipeline and conversion numbers you drove, with a founder who will vouch for them.

Not an afterthought

Treat this as essential, and you will move faster than your CV alone allows.

Most people wait to be given marketing responsibility. The ones who leap ahead go and get it. A Volunteer Term lets you own outcomes your current job would never hand you yet, then carry the proof into your next move.

It is built to sit alongside a real life. Up to three hours a day, fully remote, on your own schedule, so you can do it while employed, freelancing, studying, between roles, on a career break or in semi retirement.

A

Fits any situation

Bounded hours that slot around a job, studies, freelancing or a career break alike.

B

Own outcomes above your level

Run channels, lead a sub-team or head a function years before a job title would allow it.

C

Leave with hard proof

Referenceable campaigns, real numbers and a founder reference dated this year.

The scope of the role · 10 specialisms

Ten ways to build a marketing career here.

The marketing function breaks into ten specialisms. Take one and go deep, or move through several across your terms. Each can be held by one Volunteer or several, so the team scales well beyond ten. Here is what each one actually owns, what you would do day to day and the proof you would keep.

01

Growth & Demand Generation

Growth / Demand Generation Marketer

You own the pipeline. The job is to build a repeatable, measurable flow of the right people across organic channels, so sign-ups keep arriving without a single pound of paid spend.

  • Map the funnel from first touch to activated sign-up.
  • Run acquisition across content, social, search and email together.
  • Set pipeline targets and report against them weekly.
  • Find the few channels that compound and pour effort there.
Walk away withA documented growth playbook and pipeline numbers you can quote.
02

Brand & Communications

Brand & Communications Lead

You own how the startup sounds and what it stands for. Positioning, messaging, voice and public relations all sit with you, from the one-liner to the press pitch.

  • Craft the positioning and the core messaging framework.
  • Write the narrative the whole team tells the market.
  • Pitch press, podcasts and partners for earned coverage.
  • Keep one consistent voice across every channel.
Walk away withA messaging framework and brand guidelines you authored.
03

Content Marketing

Content Marketer / Content Writer

You own the content engine. Articles, guides, scripts and lead magnets that attract the right audience, teach them something useful and move them toward signing up.

  • Build and run an editorial calendar tied to growth goals.
  • Write, edit and ship pieces across formats.
  • Map each piece to a stage of the funnel.
  • Measure which content actually drives sign-ups.
Walk away withA published body of content with your name on it.
04

Social Media Management

Social Media Manager

You own audience and engagement across platforms. The job is to grow a following that pays attention and turns that attention into real interest in the product.

  • Plan and publish a consistent content schedule.
  • Grow followers, reach and engagement month on month.
  • Run community management and reply with a human voice.
  • Turn social attention into pipeline, not just likes.
Walk away withChannel growth charts and a repeatable content system.
05

SEO Specialism

SEO Specialist

You own organic visibility. Search is the channel that compounds, and your job is to make the startup the answer people find when they look for what it does.

  • Run keyword, intent and competitor research.
  • Fix technical SEO and site health issues.
  • Build topic clusters that earn authority over time.
  • Track rankings and organic traffic, and grow both.
Walk away withRanking wins and a traffic curve you can show moving up.
06

Email Marketing

Email Marketing Specialist

You own the lifecycle. Email is where interest is nurtured into action and quiet users are won back, all through sequences you design and refine.

  • Design onboarding, nurture and re-engagement sequences.
  • Segment the audience so each message fits.
  • Write, test and iterate subject lines and copy.
  • Measure open, click and conversion, and lift them.
Walk away withAutomated sequences and lifecycle metrics you improved.
07

Growth Experimentation

Growth Experimenter

You own the test-and-learn loop. Low cost experiments across organic channels, run honestly, with the winners scaled and the losers retired without ego.

  • Turn ideas into clear, testable hypotheses.
  • Design and run experiments with a defined success metric.
  • Read the results honestly, even when they sting.
  • Double down on what wins and document it.
Walk away withAn experiment log of tests run and wins scaled.
08

Website & Conversion

Website & Conversion Optimisation

You own the moment a visit becomes a sign-up. Conversion rate optimisation is where small, tested changes quietly compound into a meaningfully better funnel.

  • Audit the funnel and find where people drop off.
  • Design and run A/B tests on copy, layout and flow.
  • Sharpen the messaging and user experience on key pages.
  • Lift the conversion rate and prove the gain.
Walk away withBefore and after conversion lifts you can point to.
09

Marketing Analytics

Marketing Analyst

You own the truth. Analytics is what tells the team what is landing, what is noise and where the next pound of effort should go.

  • Set up tracking, events and clean dashboards.
  • Define the handful of metrics that actually matter.
  • Report clearly to leadership on a regular rhythm.
  • Turn data into decisions the team can act on.
Walk away withDashboards and an analytics framework you built.
10

Community & Partnerships

Community & Partnerships Support

You own reach through people. Communities, partners and advocates extend a startup far beyond what it could buy, and that network is yours to build.

  • Build and nurture a community that wants to be there.
  • Line up partnerships, collaborations and cross-promotions.
  • Activate advocates and turn fans into reach.
  • Measure referred reach and the relationships behind it.
Walk away withA partner network and a community you grew from scratch.

Operational · Management · Leadership

One pathway, three levels, no waiting your turn.

You do not have to start at the top, and you do not have to stay at the bottom. Across three Volunteer Terms you can rise from a hands-on specialist to leading a sub-team to running the whole function. Every promotion is earned on results, not time served.

Term one · Operational
Specialist

Deliver hands-on results

Join the marketing team in one of the ten specialisms and deliver visible, significant results that earn you a name and a reference.

For example

Term two · Management
Sub-team leader · leads about five

Step up to management

Earn a promotion and lead a sub-team of around five Volunteers, owning a whole slice of the function and coaching the people in it.

Term three · Leadership
Head of Marketing

Lead the whole function

Take the top marketing seat, set the strategy and direct every channel and specialist on the team, then continue toward Chief Marketing Officer.

The seat
Head of Marketing→ Chief Marketing Officer

Already an experienced leader? You can step straight in at the top. Each promotion is earned on results, not time served.

For experienced marketers

Ready to lead the whole function?

If you have already built brands, generated demand and led teams, the Head of Marketing role lets you direct the entire function for a tech startup, or for SkilledUp Life itself, on your own terms. A dedicated pathway lays out exactly what that seat involves.

HM

You set the strategy and direct the specialists. The function can scale from a core few to dozens, inside a go to market organisation of up to 100 Volunteers.

  • Own the strategy and the team's outcomes
  • Inherit a running team or build one from scratch
  • Mentor a founder who could never afford a CMO

The marketing pathway fits every stage of a career, because the thing it gives you, demonstrable proof, is useful at all of them.

🌱
Breaking in

Early in your career

No marketing degree and no agency on your CV. Earn your first referenceable campaigns and a founder reference to point to.

🔁
Switching fields

Changing careers

Moving into marketing from another field. Prove you can deliver before anyone asks you to, then make the switch with evidence.

🚀
Already employed

Own channels and lead teams your current title will not hand you yet, in a few hours a week, and carry the proof into your next move.

🧭
Returning

Back after a break

🎓
Specialising

Going deep in one area

Already in marketing but want depth in SEO, content, analytics or growth. Run that specialism end to end on a live product.

👑
Leading

Experienced leaders

Seasoned and ready to direct a whole function. Step straight into the Head of Marketing seat.

What you walk away with

Proof, not promises.

Whatever specialism or level you choose, a marketing term leaves you with evidence an employer can verify, the difference between saying you can market and showing that you have.

Referenceable campaigns

The strategies you set and the campaigns you shipped, ready to show and explain.

Outcomes you can quote

Real reach, pipeline and conversion numbers from a live tech startup, not a slide.

A founder reference

A verifiable reference from the founders you partnered with, dated this year.

A specialism mastered

Deep, demonstrable command of the channel or function you chose to own.

Leadership evidence

If you climb, proof that you can lead a sub-team or an entire marketing function.

A global network

Connections with founders, operators and marketers across 148 countries.

Getting started

Start your marketing pathway in three steps.

Three simple moves to begin building demonstrable marketing experience.

1

Create your profile

Sign up as a Volunteer, flag the specialisms you want and build your profile to at least 70%.

2

Match with a startup

Browse live marketing Opportunities and apply to the ones that fit your goals, up to three at a time.

3

Deliver & climb

Join the team, own real marketing outcomes and earn your next rung. The full journey is on the how it works page.

The commitment, in brief

Clear scope, no surprises.

Here are the boundaries of a Volunteer Term, so you know exactly what you are taking on before you begin.

3 hrs

Per day, maximum

Monday to Friday: a manageable daily add-on to your week.

60 days

Over three or more months

A clear, bounded term with a defined end point.

Extend if you wish

Continue by mutual agreement when it suits both sides.

A Volunteer Term is voluntary throughout. You cannot earn financially or gain any taxable reward in kind during the term, and there are no paid jobs via SkilledUp Life. The value you take away is experience, proof, network and impact.

Questions

The questions people ask first.

Do I need marketing qualifications to start? +
No. You can begin at the specialist level with the willingness to deliver real outcomes and learn fast. Qualifications are welcome but never required, and many people use this pathway precisely to build the experience that formal study does not give.
Can I do this while I am employed? +
Yes, and many do. The term is capped at up to three hours a day, fully remote, on a schedule you agree with the startup. It is designed to sit alongside a full time job, a course, a career break or semi retirement.
Do I have to pick one specialism? +
No. Start in the one that fits you best, then move across or up over later terms. Some people go deep in a single specialism, others use the pathway to climb from specialist to sub-team leader to Head of Marketing.
How do promotions happen? +
On results, not time served. Deliver significant, visible outcomes in a term and you can be promoted into management of a sub-team, and from there into leadership of the whole function. From the top seat the same trajectory continues toward Chief Marketing Officer.
Is the role genuinely unpaid? +
Yes. A Volunteer Term is voluntary throughout. You cannot earn financially or receive any taxable reward in kind, and there are no paid jobs via SkilledUp Life. What you gain is experience, proof, network and impact.
Which startups can I do marketing for? +
Early stage tech startups only, including SkilledUp Life itself. You apply to the marketing Volunteer Opportunities that have been listed. You cannot approach a startup that has not listed a role. Charities and non profits sit outside SkilledUp Life.
I am already a senior leader. Where do I start? +
Step straight into leadership. The Head of Marketing pathway is written for experienced professionals ready to direct a whole function for a startup or for SkilledUp Life.
How do I apply? +
Create a Volunteer account, complete your profile, then apply to up to three marketing Opportunities. The full nine step journey is explained on the how it works page.

Do not wait for marketing experience. Go and create it.

Pick a specialism, run real campaigns and climb a pathway built to leapfrog careers. Free, remote, flexible and worth your time.
