Your Customer Success lead, explained in plain English.

A Head of Customer Success owns what happens after a customer signs up. They design the customer journey, lead the people who onboard and support customers, and keep a close eye on who might leave, so the revenue you win stays won.

No tech background needed. This guide explains the role in plain English: what it is, when you need it, what to expect and how to choose the right Volunteer.

What does a Head of Customer Success do for you?

“

Think of the manager of a good hotel.

Sales fills the rooms. The hotel manager makes sure every guest is welcomed, problems are fixed quickly and people want to come back and recommend the place to friends.

1

Owns the customer journey

A clear path from sign up to value, for every customer.

2

Leads the team

Recruits, guides and coaches the Volunteers who look after customers.

3

Protects revenue

Spots the customers at risk of leaving and acts early.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your Customer Success team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓You are answering every customer question yourself
  • ✓Customers sign up but some never really start using the product
  • ✓You do not know which customers are happy and which are about to leave
  • ✓Renewals arrive as a surprise
  • ✓You have several Customer Success Volunteers and nobody leading them

You can wait if

  • …You have only a handful of customers and enjoy speaking with each one
  • …You have not yet found customers who will pay (focus on Sales first)
What they own

Four areas a Head of Customer Success takes off your plate.

01

Customer journey

Onboarding, support and check-ins mapped from first login to renewal.

02

Team and playbooks

Roles, processes and scripts the team follows.

03

Customer health

Signals that show who is thriving and who is at risk.

04

Reporting

Retention, renewals and feedback shared with you every week.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

3
★

By day 60

A documented customer journey, clear reporting on retention and a handover plan so the next lead can continue.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?How would you map our customer journey in your first two weeks?
  • ?How do you know a customer is at risk of leaving?
  • ?Tell me about a customer you saved. What did you do?
  • ?How would you organise a small team of Volunteers?

Good signs

  • ✓Talks about customer outcomes, not only tickets
  • ✓Uses data and conversations together
  • ✓Has led or coached others before

Red flags

  • ✕Focuses only on answering tickets faster
  • ✕Cannot explain how they would measure success
  • ✕Wants expensive tools before understanding the customers
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓Access to customer data, the help desk and any customer tools
  • ✓Introductions to your most important customers
  • ✓Your goals for retention and renewals
  • ✓A weekly 30 minute review
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Do I need a Head of Customer Success this early? +
Only once you have more customers than you can look after yourself. Before that, a Customer Support Specialist or Customer Success Manager may be enough.
Which plan do I need? +
Customer Success sits within the Advanced (GTM) plan, alongside Marketing and Sales. See the Customer Success team page.
What happens when their Volunteer Term ends? +
Many Volunteers continue for up to three consecutive terms by mutual agreement. Plan succession early: ask them to document the playbook and customer health reports, and overlap with the next lead where possible.
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Advanced (GTM) plan at £250 a month or £2,500 a year, which lets you recruit up to 100 Volunteer team members across Marketing, Sales and Customer Success. See the plans.
