What does a Head of Marketing do for you?

“

Think of a conductor.

Each musician knows their instrument. The conductor decides the piece, sets the tempo and makes sure everyone plays together, so the audience hears music rather than noise.

1

Sets the direction

A clear plan for who to reach, where and with what message.

2

Leads the specialists

Briefs, coordinates and reviews the marketing team.

3

Reports what matters

Simple measures that show whether marketing is bringing in customers.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your Marketing team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓You are posting and advertising but cannot say what is bringing in customers
  • ✓Several marketing Volunteers are active and nobody coordinates them
  • ✓Your message changes from one channel to the next
  • ✓You are spending your own week on marketing tasks
  • ✓You are preparing a launch or a new market

You can wait if

  • …You have no product customers can use yet (start with Idea Validation or Product)
  • …You only need one specialist for a narrow task, such as a website refresh
What they own

Four areas a Head of Marketing takes off your plate.

01

Marketing strategy

Target customers, positioning, channels and goals.

02

The marketing plan

A calendar of campaigns, content and launches.

03

Team leadership

Recruiting, briefing and reviewing the specialists.

04

Measurement

Reporting leads, sign ups and cost per customer to you.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

Weeks 1 and 2

Learns the product and customers, reviews what has been tried and shares a first draft of the marketing plan. Daily updates and rapid feedback from you matter most here.

2
▤

By mid term

Agreed priorities, specialists briefed and the first campaigns running with clear measures.

3
★

By day 60

Results reported against the plan, a playbook of what succeeded and a handover so the next lead can continue.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?How would you decide which channel to start with for our product?
  • ?Tell me about a campaign you led. How did you measure it?
  • ?How would you organise a team of Volunteer specialists?
  • ?What would you report to me each week?

Good signs

  • ✓Starts with the customer and the goal, not the channel
  • ✓Measures results, not activity
  • ✓Comfortable leading people they have not met in person

Red flags

  • ✕Wants to be on every channel at once
  • ✕Cannot explain past results in numbers
  • ✕Talks only about tools and trends
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓Your goals for revenue and customers
  • ✓Access to your website, social accounts and analytics
  • ✓Any positioning or customer research you already have
  • ✓A weekly 30 minute review
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Do I need a Head of Marketing before specialists? +
Usually, yes. A lead sets the direction so specialists do not pull in different ways. If you start with one specialist, act as the lead yourself for now.
Is this the same as a Product Marketer? +
No. A Product Marketer decides what to say about the product. A Head of Marketing runs the whole marketing function, including channels, campaigns and the team.
Where do Volunteers interested in this role learn more? +
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Advanced (GTM) plan at £250 a month or £2,500 a year, which lets you recruit up to 100 Volunteer team members across Marketing, Sales and Customer Success. See the plans.
