Your Growth Marketer, explained in plain English.

A Growth or Demand Generation Marketer builds a steady, measurable flow of interested prospects for your startup. They test channels, run campaigns and hand qualified leads to Sales, so growth does not depend on luck or on your personal contacts.

No tech background needed. This guide explains the role in plain English: what it is, when you need it, what to expect and how to choose the right Volunteer.

What does a Growth Marketer do for you?

“

Think of a farmer planting several fields.

Not every field yields the same crop. The farmer plants a few, watches which ones grow best and puts more seed where the harvest is strongest.

1

Fills the pipeline

A steady flow of prospects who match your ideal customer.

2

Tests channels

Small, measured experiments to find what brings in customers.

3

Hands over to Sales

Leads passed on with the context Sales needs.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your Marketing team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓Most of your customers come from your own contacts
  • ✓You do not know which channel brings in your best customers
  • ✓Sales has too few leads to follow up
  • ✓You have tried ads or posts but cannot tell what succeeded
  • ✓You need predictable growth before fundraising

You can wait if

  • …You have not yet defined your ideal customer (start with Market Research)
What they own

Four areas a Growth Marketer takes off your plate.

01

Channel tests

Small experiments across channels, with clear success measures.

02

Campaigns

Lead generation campaigns from brief to results.

03

Lead handover

Agreeing with Sales what counts as a qualified lead.

04

Pipeline reporting

Leads, cost per lead and conversion to customers.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

2
▤

Tests running, early results shared and the strongest channels getting more attention.

3
★

By day 60

A documented view of which channels bring in customers, a running campaign and a handover plan.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?Which channels would you test first for us, and why?
  • ?Tell me about an experiment that failed. What did you learn?
  • ?How do you decide when to stop a test?
  • ?How would you hand leads to our Sales team?

Good signs

  • ✓Thinks in experiments with clear measures
  • ✓Talks about customers and conversion, not only clicks
  • ✓Shares results honestly, including failures

Red flags

  • ✕Promises viral growth
  • ✕Measures success by likes or impressions alone
  • ✕Wants a large budget before testing
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓A clear description of your ideal customer
  • ✓Access to analytics, ad accounts and your CRM
  • ✓A small test budget, if paid channels are involved
  • ✓Agreement with Sales on what a good lead looks like
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Is growth marketing just paid advertising? +
No. Paid ads are one channel. Growth marketing also covers content, email, partnerships, referrals and anything that can be tested and measured.
Do I need a budget? +
Not always. Many tests use organic channels such as content, communities and email. If paid channels are tested, agree a small budget and limits in advance.
How does this role connect with Sales? +
Growth creates qualified interest and Sales turns it into customers. See the Sales team, which is also part of Advanced (GTM).
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Advanced (GTM) plan at £250 a month or £2,500 a year, which lets you recruit up to 100 Volunteer team members across Marketing, Sales and Customer Success. See the plans.
